Footy- those we love and loathe
April 23rd 2008 10:02
Footy is a passionate past time, for players and spectators, and it almost compels all involved in the game to develop a love for some players and teams and an extreme dislike for others. Some of mine are listed below.
Most loved team (s): Primarily, my love, passion and adoration lies with the Brisbane Lions. This love comes quite easily for someone who lives in Queensland because the Lions are the only team based in the Sunshine State. Therefore, for most people, AFL influence is Lions influence. I have been a member of the Club for five years now and attend most home games, waving my maroon, blue, and gold flag when they win; leaving early to "avoid traffic" when they lose. I count myself very lucky to have been alive during their golden era when they won three premierships in a row; I don't think I will be alive for them, or any other team, to do it again. All for one, one for all.
I am also thoroughly enjoying watching Geelong at the moment. I'm not the type to support a team when they're hot and desert them when they turn stone cold. However, it is hard not to be mesmerised by Geelong's grandeur on the footy field: their flawless team work makes them graceful on the field and unbeaten on the ladder.
When they were playing at their best and with the added assistance of Chris Judd and Ben Cousins, West Coast was also a team that I stayed home on a Saturday night to watch. Some of the best games I have ever watched were between the Eagles and the Swans: both teams had the hunger to out mark, out kick, out tackle, and out score the other, which made for nail biting footy.
I admittedly hold a soft spot for the Carlton Football Club. Although they have struggled in recent times, they seem to always wear their hearts on their sleeves, walking into challenges together and walking out together. Christ Judd certainly sweetened their taste, but Fevola too is a genius of the game.
Most unloved team (s):
Collingwood- The spirit of Darth Vader lives on. It wears white and black stripes and is controlled not by the Emperor but a bloke named Mick. However, I am forced to thank them for their efforts in the 2002 and 2003 Grand Finals, for if it weren't for that, the Lions would not be inscribed in AFL history.
Adelaide- obvious reasons.
North Melbourne- Adelaide's reasons.
Most loved player (s): Chris Judd. He controls the game of football like Mozart controlled a musical staff. He has proven himself as a valuable leader, player, and ambassador for the game- making him perhaps the most in-demand player of modern football. Games are won through his ability to read the play and determine the easiest way to get an inflated mound of leather from one end of a footy field to the other.
Most unloved player (s): Ben Cousins. Why must he continue to play with the wrapping paper when he has been given such a wonderful gift? If he had checked his bearings and altered his path, he would be alongside Chris Judd in my mind.
2008 Flag winner: Geelong, they deserve it.
